China and Georgia Upgrade Ties to Strategic Partnership

Between July 26 and August 1, 2023, China and Georgia reached a broad consensus to upgrade bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. Both sides are willing to expand cooperation in political, economic, and cultural fields, and strengthen collaboration in international affairs, bilateral relations, and regional stability.
Specifically, China and Georgia promote mutual investment and trade in transportation, communications, infrastructure modernization, digital technology, agriculture and food safety, water resources, environment, and other fields. Also, both sides signed a series of documents in investment fields, including the China and Georgia to Jointly Build the “Belt and Road” Cooperation Plan, and strengthened policy coordination and development plan docking within the framework of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative. Georgia would like to expand the exports of goods and services to China, while China is willing to provide favorable policy loans to Georgia’s social and infrastructure projects.
Since the China-Georgia Free Trade Agreement came into effect in 2018, the two countries’ cooperation has been enhanced deeply. The two countries are willing to continue to strengthen cooperation within the framework of the agreement, support enterprises of China and Georgia to carry out economic and commercial collaboration based on the principle of mutual benefit, and actively explore the possibility of further enriching the content of the agreement.
